Within the established framework of cooperation between the Ministry of Health and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UNHCR office in Tunisia continue to support the Ministry in their various capacity building initiatives in places where large number of refugees are located. In this line, UNHCR Tunisia has handed-over today on 14 March 2017, IT equipment to the Ministry of Health in its premises in Tunis, to complete the needed equipment for the newly established Strategic Health Operations Centre (SHOC) in Sfax.
The Director of emergency health unit at the Health Ministry, Dr. Naoufel Somrani, officially received this equipment on 14 March 2017 in the presence of UNHCR Deputy Representative, Ms. Felicitas Nebril along senior staff from both the ministry and UNHCR. To formalise the donation, an agreement on the transfer of ownership of these assets was signed by both parties during the meeting. As part of its strategy, UNHCR pursues to strengthen its support to the authorities in areas where refugees and asylum-seekers are provided access to health services along with the local communities.
This donation also aims to strengthen the capacities of Health Ministry in its preparedness and response efforts to address health challenges that may be experienced in the country. It can be recalled that Ministry of Health plays an important role in the inter-agency contingency planning facilitated by UNHCR and IOM in 2014, along with other Tunisian authorities, UN agencies and NGOs.
This material assistance complements with the overall support provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) to the Ministry of Health.
